Oak Spring Places

Oak Spring Places

“Place” is the result of the interaction between people and landscape – a mix of natural and human history that tells us about the natural world and human activity together, rather than separately.  OSGF is undertaking two major projects to study and communicate our rich story of place.

Landscape Management Report

Working with ecologist Michael Gaige, OSGF has recently finished a comprehensive landscape report describing the history and ecology of Oak Spring, as well as recommendations for future landscape management. Beginning with ancient geologic history, the report moves into the present natural communities found throughout this Virginia Piedmont landscape. Read it here to learn about Oak Spring’s past and where we’ll be headed in the future.

Oak Spring Places

Continuing our commitment to the local environmental and human history, we are embarking on the creation of a gazetteer, a small book describing the ways in which the Mellons – and Oak Spring itself – are woven into the geography of northern Virginia and beyond. This is an ongoing project and we will post updates here on our website and to social media as the project progresses.
