Meet our Founder

Oak Spring Garden Foundation and Racial Injustice

At the Oak Spring Garden Foundation, we are truly fortunate and privileged in so many ways. We are grateful to be secure in our jobs and to be able to pursue our work around food access, artistic expression, research, and the many issues related to the world of plants. But with privilege comes our fundamental responsibility to work for public benefit and a better society.

On May 25, 2020, we were outraged by the needless death of George Floyd and were once again reminded that it is part of an appalling pattern that includes Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others. Systemic racism is long-standing and deeply entrenched in American society, but it cannot be ignored and it must be addressed. These issues are not our usual topics of discussion, but we need to speak up where we see injustice and we must listen to those for whom it is a daily lived experience. We all have a responsibility to face down the ugliness of racism and violence in our society, and we need to echo the words that should go without saying: that black lives matter.

If you are looking for ways to support those who work actively to counter racial injustice, consider supporting Campaign Zero, the American Civil Liberties Union, and/or the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

If your interests align with OSGF’s usual mission areas but also want to take action on issues related to racial justice, consider supporting organizations in our region that tackle issues like food access in underprivileged communities, such as DC Greens and the Chesapeake Foodshed Network’s Community Ownership, Empowerment, and Prosperity Action Team.

Oak Spring Garden Foundation and COVID-19

We hope you are all safe and well in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here at Oak Spring, with all our programs cancelled, we are focused on keeping our staff healthy and supporting our local community, especially our local food banks. Our new Biocultural Conservation Farm is scaling-up production to provide over 15,000 lbs of produce to the Fauquier Community Food Bank in Warrenton and the Seven Loaves Food Pantry in Middleburg in the coming months. Our Farmers for Food Relief program is supporting local farmers to supply fresh fruits and vegetables to the Fauquier Community Food Bank. We have also provided a supply of respirators and filters to the Fauquier Health Hospital.

We have closed applications on our ‘COVID-19 Artist Response Program,’ and are releasing digital exhibits by 13 selected artists on our website throughout the summer. We are also strengthening our electronic communications. If you are in need of some virtual access to nature, we are posting short video clips of our site to our social media channels, and live streaming videos of our garden, farm and landscape. Please follow our Facebook page, and check our website Virtual Garden for new videos and clips.

If you are looking for ways to support the local community, visit the PATH Foundation website for information about how you can support those in need in Rappahannock, Fauquier and Culpeper Counties. To support the local food system, you can find information on local farms and farmers through this interactive map on Future Harvest or by visiting the Piedmont Environmental Council’s Buy Fresh Buy Local map. Many local farms and farmers, who previously supplied local restaurants are now providing CSA shares, produce drop-offs and produce pick-ups.
