A Creative Palette

"She expressed her creativity in three dimensions, embracing the challenge of a living palette that changes with the seasons."

– Sir Peter Crane, in the Foreword to "The Gardens of Bunny Mellon."

Rusty leaves blow in the wind and crunch underfoot. The changes of autumn are being felt across the Oak Spring landscape with all of the indicators of a waning season. Still, as days become shorter and cooler, the creative work at OSGF only continues to grow more vibrant and multidimensional.

Oak Spring itself is like a palette – not just of changing colors, but of new ideas and people who are exploring the many ways that plants give us life and purpose. From public lectures and screenings, continued artist programming, and the first harvests of a new farm, we have had a lot going on this fall. Explore below to learn about the latest activities taking place at the Oak Spring Garden Foundation.

All About Apples
Our Bio-cultural Conservation Farm, established earlier this year, has experienced an extraordinary first fall harvest – yielding over 4,000 pounds of squash, greens, and other produce. Watch this video to see what we did with 800 pounds of apples we harvested – a model we hope to replicate with other crops in the future!
Artistic Exploration: Over the past several months, Oak Spring's beautiful landscape and library have continued to support some of the most talented emerging artists and writers from around the country. Our landscapes, facilities, and staff have helped facilitate some truly innovative work relating to the natural world, which has in turn helped us in our mission to increase public dialogue on the history and future of plants. Read more about our recent, ongoing, and upcoming art activities at Oak Spring.

Out in the Community:
While Oak Spring has been a bustle of on-site activity, we are also doing a lot of work beyond the borders of our stone walls and split rail fences. From nearby Middleburg and out across wonderful Appalachia, we continue to develop outreach and public engagement activities that help us connect with a broader and more diverse range of people. See what we've been up to.
Landscape: Autumn is a busy time for our teams out across the Oak Spring landscape. From utilizing traditional landscaping methods, continuing conservation projects, and welcoming new faces on our farm, we have plenty of updates to share!
Garden: As summer vanishes and winter approaches, gardens take on a different character. While the Oak Spring garden is becoming less verdant with the season, it isn't any less beautiful, nor our gardeners less busy. See our garden in the fall.
It's Halloween, and that means embracing the macabre, the frightening, and the ghoulish. In the spirit of the season, we created a list of the ten most monstrous plants we could think of: some definitely fiction, some that are very real, and several that are somewhere in between.
