To Inspire & Educate

"She gave freedom for those that followed her, and all she asked is that we use their house, garden and library to inspire and educate, particularly around plants."

– From The Washington Post Magazine article, "The Path to Paradise: Reviving the (very) private garden of Bunny Mellon."

Oak Spring is a place for growth. By offering the resources on our site and by collaborating with other organizations, we hope to create meaningful and helpful experiences for tomorrow's leaders in the world of plants, gardens, and landscapes. One of the major ways we support future leaders is through our Fellowship and Residency Programs, which we offer to artists, researchers, and writers whose work is influenced by the natural world and humankind's place in it.

In 2020 we will be offering a broader array of opportunities than ever before. Explore below to see news about our Fellowships and Residency Programs, as well as our other activities. We are actively seeking applications for all of these programs, so now is the time to learn about – and share with others – what we have to offer!

Women Writers in Residence: We are excited to announce a new residency program in partnership with Hedgebrook – a literary arts nonprofit that supports women writers whose stories and ideas shape our culture now and for generations to come. The residency, hosted on the Oak Spring estate, is designed to embrace the 'radical hospitality' that is a cornerstone of Hedgebrook residencies. Learn more and apply >

Application deadline: July 23.
Botanical Artists in Residence:
Our support for artists is growing with our inaugural Botanical Artists in Residence Program (BAiR). The aim of the BAiR, done in collaboration with the American Society of Botanical Artists, is to extend our support for artists to practitioners of botanical illustration – which sits at a unique intersection of art and science, and is well represented in the Oak Spring Garden Library collection. Learn more and apply >

Application deadline: November 8.
Researchers in Residence:
We are no longer requiring an academic affiliation in order to apply for our Researchers in Residence program. We hope that this will open our Library to a more diverse array of researchers – including those who are working on projects independently and for nonacademic publications, like books, blogs, and podcasts. Learn more and apply >

Application deadline: August 11.
The programs listed above reflect the newest additions to our roster of programs. In 2020, we will also be hosting Fellowship and Residency Programs that we have previously announced – including our standard Artist Awards, the Stacy Lloyd III Fellowship for Bibliographic Study, and the Oak Spring Fellows in Plant Biology and Conservation Program.
We were thrilled to participate in the American Public Garden Association's annual conference in June by displaying our exhibit, Cultivating History: Food, Crops, and Art. This loan exhibit, comprising facsimiles of works from the Oak Spring Garden Library, is tailored to the Virginia Standards of Learning and designed to be a resource for educators – in schools, libraries, and gardens – to share the story of where our food comes from. To learn more, watch our introduction video below and visit the exhibit webpage here >
